wynne evans, our patron

The Tŷ Cymorth Hospice Appeal is pleased and honoured that Wynne Evans has agreed to be Patron of the Appeal.
Born in Carmarthen, Wynne was educated at Pentrepoeth Primary School and Queen Elizabeth Cambria School before going on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio.
Wynne is a trustee of the Elizabeth Evans Trust. His mother, Elizabeth Evans MBE founded and ran both the Carmarthen Youth Opera and the Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen for 25 years, supported by his father, David. She died in 2004 and subsequently Wynne and his two brothers founded the Trust.
Wynne’s father, David, was a patient at Tŷ Cymorth, which he found to be an inspiring and comforting place. Every day he would talk about his days at the hospice. Wynne is delighted to be involved with Tŷ Cymorth as Patron and is indebted to the staff and volunteers at this very special place.
Wynne Evans’s operatic appearances have taken him to major opera houses in the UK and to world famous opera houses abroad. He regularly performs at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and as a principal tenor with Welsh National Opera he has performed central roles in a range of operatic works frequently broadcast on the BBC and S4C. He has appeared throughout the UK, with companies such as Opera North, English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Classical Opera Company, Chelsea Opera Group, Opera Northern Ireland, Glyndebourne Festival, and Almeida Opera.
Singing to millions for a TV advertising campaign has made him a household name. Both his debut album, “A Song in My Heart” and his second album “Wynne” went to Number 1 in the classical charts. He has his own shows on BBC Radio Wales, Classic FM and S4C and he has also presented for BBC TV. In 2014, Wynne fronted the advertising campaign for BBC Wales’s coverage of the Six Nations, teaching the country to sing “Calon Lan”. He is no stranger to the rugby pitch having famously responded to the New Zealand Haka in 2004, then went on to make over 30 appearances on the pitch. He sang alongside superstar Bryn Terfel at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in summer 2014 in Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. He also appeared in the role of Scaramuccio in Strauss’s “Ariadne and Naxos”, part of the 2013/2014 season at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
Wynne was made a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards of Wales in 2012 and an Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales Trinity St David in 2013. He was also made a Member of the Venerable Order of St John by HM the Queen in 2008.
